In recent years, the art of the cocktail has reached new heights. While old standards certainly never go out of style, there are some exciting new trends in the libation arena. Houston has plenty of great bars throughout the city and there are a few standouts that have made a name for themselves by serving innovative flavor in a vibrant setting.
Located in the Downtown area near Market Square Park, Moving Sidewalk embraces its quirky side in every way, from its creative name to its eclectic drinks menu. Brick-lined walls and rustic finishes are combined with sparkling chandeliers to create a funky and festive vibe. The cocktails are the main event at Moving Sidewalk, where drinks are hand-crafted and named after famous rock ‘n roll radio stations such as the Crash “Collins” and the Outlaw Dave’s Bounty Hunter Buck.
Making its home in the Montrose neighborhood, Anvil Bar and Refuge is on a mission to create the best drinks with the finest ingredients. Open since 2009, this industrial-chic hotspot takes its cocktails seriously and created a “must serve” list of their favorite classic cocktails. These drinks are rotated through the menu and are made from their massive inventory of fine liquors and include the passion fruit-infused Waltzing Matilda and the frothy Whiskey Sour.
Self-described as an “adult wonderland”, HandleBar Houston crafts incredibly creative drinks in a spirited environment. Located in The Heights area, this industrial-style bar is all about fun with vintage carousel ride animals and upscale arcade games. The main focus, however, is in their cocktail menu which features a cucumber muddled concoction called the Aku Aku, Baby and the ginger beer-flavored Frida Kahlo. Happy hour happens seven days a week at HandleBar Houston with nightly specials and food offered by local food trucks.
